Laa- uq-simu bi-haa-dzal-balad
I do call to witness this City―
Wa-anta Hil-lum bi haa-dzal- balad
And thou art a freeman of this City―
Wa-waa-li-diw-wa-maa wa-lad
And (the mystic ties of) Parent and Child―
La-qod-kho-loq-nal in-saa-na
fee-kabad
Verily We have created Man into toil
and struggle.
A-yaH-sabu an-lan-yaq-
dira -'alay-hi a-Had
Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
Ya-qoo-lu ah-lak-tu maa-
lal-luba-da
He may say (boastfully): "Wealth have
I squandered in abundance!"
A-yaH-sabu al-lam
ya-ro-huu - a-Had
Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Alam- naj- 'al-la-huu- 'ay- nayn
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?―
Wa-li-saa-naw-wa-sha-fa-tayn
And a tongue, and a pair of lips?―
Wa- ha-dai-naa-hun-naj-dayn
And shown him the two highways?
Fa-laq-ta-hamal-'aqobah
But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
Wa-maa- ad-raa-ka mal- 'aqobah
And what will explain to thee, the path that is steep?
Fak-ku ra-qobah
(It is:) freeing the bondman;
Au- itw-'aa-mun fee-yau-min
dzee- mas-gha-bah
Or the giving of food in a day of privation
Ya-tee-man dzaa-
maq-robah
To the orphan with claims of relationship,
Au-mis-kee-nan-dzaa-
mat-robah
Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
Tsum-ma kaa-na minal-ladzii-na
aa-manu wa-ta-waa-swau-bis-swobri
wa-ta-waa-swau-bil mar-Ha-mah
Then will he be of those who believe,
and enjoin patience,
(constancy, and self-restraint),
and enjoin deeds of kindness
and compassion.
